About Monastery

Far behind the Himalayas of Nepal, attached to the Tibet border, upper mustang is located at a very remote and untouched zone. It has its own distinct history and tradition. It is the land which has Tibet’s original sphere of influence and where Tibetan culture continues to survive.

Upper mustang is located in the trans-Himalaya region of Nepal. It is a home for more than 6000 people with approximately 31 settlements. It occupies an area of 2567 sp. Km. Buddhism is the only religion of the place and there are lots of ancients monasteries with their own formation and history. Most of the monasteries are in an extinct condition.Charang monastery, Lho-monthang monastery. Ghemi monastery, Lho-gekar monastery and Namgyal Thupten Dhargyeling monastery are the major monasteries of the Upper mustang.

Namgyal Thupten Dhargyeling Monastery was established in the 13th century during the Ngor tradition by the great Vajra Ngorchen Kunga Sangpo. This monastery was established by accumulating four great monasteries of Ngor tradtion like Phuphak Samten Ling, Rishing Domsum Ling, Jampa Shedrup Ling and Drakar Theckchen Ling. These monasteries were founded in 1310 (5th cycle of Tibetan calendar) and these were established before the birth of Ngorchen Kunga Sangpo. It is also tells us that the teachings of Sutrayana and Tantrayana flourished to a great extent in those monasteries.

Namgyal Choede Thupten Dhargyeling Monastery is an examplary Vajrayan worship place in the Himalayan region.acts as the key holder of the four great ancient monastries. In addition, Ngorchen Kunga Sangpo brought into existence of spiritual community. He sustained this community for imparting instructions, recitations, and empowerments and ripens many practitioners according to the four great secret tantras.

In 1428 the great scholar Shakya Chokden was invited to Mustang where he imparted teachings and recitation of the Manjushri Sutra and the four great secret tantras to more than thousands people in the presence of the King Tashi Gon and the Prince of Mustang. At same time the king was afraid of sudden attack by southern and northern province then he pleaded with the great scholar Shakya Chokden to reverse the situation. In accordance with the king's request Rinpoche performed regular Torma offering and focused his mind on the four headed Mahakala, after a while king's unfavorable situation was improved.

But because of decreased number of monks and rare visit of the high lama’s, it has reached to an extinct condition. Not been able to withstand the poor condition of the monks of Namgyal Thupten Dhargyeling monastery, couple of years back, seeing the extensive religious background and his educational qualifications; H.H Sakya Trizin and H.E. Lhuding Khenchen Rinpoche appointed Ven. Khenpo Tsewan Rigzin of Sakya College as the Abbot or Khenpo of Namgyal monastery.

Thus, knowing the condition of the monastery and its necessities for better future. Khenpo Tsewang Rigzin has initiated a noble project to establish a monastic school for poor and unprivileged children of Upper mustang.
In order to run this project smoothly and continually he established a foundation under the name of monastery as Pal Ewam Namgyal Thupten Dhargyeling Foundation (PENTDF) in year 2005 in the name of Monastery. We the Namgyal Monastic family would like to request all the faithful sponsors, practitioners of Buddha’s teachings, friends and well wishers to support us in every way possible.
